Census 2020 Special Update 5/27/20

Census 2020

Special Update

27 May 2020

You have received your form in the mail and many of you have responded to the 2020 Census ... Many Thanks!  This is a special report to the residents of the VBM ... all 8,000 of you.

Let’s re-cap where Briarcliff stands:

  • The good news is that as of yesterday, Briarcliff Manor stands at a 75.8% response rate: tied at 4th place Westchester County wide.  Our final 2010 Census response rate was 77.9%.  For this timeframe and the overlay of the Coronavirus effects, we are at a great response rate with the likes of Scarsdale, Ardsley, New Castle, Pelham Manor, Croton.  The highest response rate is 76.4%.
  • The bad news is that we still have 24.2% of Briarcliff Manor UNCOUNTED: that would be about 2,000 still missing. We are 2.1% below our 2010 final score. What does this mean? The basic calculations are that for every person who does not respond, approximately $2,800 is lost per year for 10 years: that’s potentially $5.6 million allocated to all levels of government within our Village.
  • Here’s the rub.  Notwithstanding the continued Coronavirus/CDC regulated guidelines (social distancing), the US Census Bureau will be sending people out into Briarcliff Manor to knock on the doors of everyone who has not yet replied.
  • Here’s how you can help ALL of Briarcliff Manor ... we need to minimize the need for people to come into our community and knock on doors during this pandemic. We are asking you to call or reach out to even just 3 neighbors/friends in Briarcliff over the phone and ask them if they filled out the Census: (need forms? Go to my2020census.gov).  Then you add on and ask them to reach out to another 3 neighbors or friends in the Village. The phone chain still works in this high tech age. Alternatively, you can e-mail all of your Briarcliff contacts to remind them to reply to the Census asking them to e-mail their contacts. Repetition is a good thing!

It is very important to have a full count of our residents.  All we ask you to do is to take a few minutes to count yourself and your family now ... and in the course of your daily routine to talk to friends, neighbors ... even your relatives ... to get counted!

On behalf of Rhea Mallett and myself ... Thanks and be healthy!
